Weeks 3 The coming of the great and awesome Day of the Lord

Week 3

Day 1

*In weeks 3 and 4 we will look at the geopolitical situation inherited by Jesus when He comes to inaugurate/establish His administration (kingdom-reign).  How does it all begin?  What is God’s purpose in Jesus’ Messianic reign?  What will He do to establish peace on earth and how will the nations react/respond?  Does Jesus just snap His finger, and everything is blissfully subjected to Him?  This study will challenge your perception of the biblical prophetic future—and promises to lift your eyes out of the current political disarray 😊.  So, don’t get too worked up over your favorite news anchor’s analysis and confusion, because what you are currently witnessing is not the end of the world.

Or is it?

Just imagine.

Try to imagine eternity’s most epic transition of governing administrations from the spirit-world vantage-point.  The Day of the Lord will introduce a change in two [very spiritual] theocracies:

Theocracy #1 is a counterfeit kingdom[1] that was hijacked/stolen from Adam in the garden[2]. This kingdom, called the kingdom of darkness, has ruled human history for six thousand years.  The imposter “king” of kings these six thousand years of earth’s history has been the devil[3] with all his fallen angelic host[4].  Satan’s kingdom has remained a pseudo-theocratic administration growing in abject rebellion to God – and all things right, true, and just.  This kingdom will culminate in the Great Tribulation where the devil, through the personage of the Beast (the anti-Christ), will be worshiped as God in the temple in Jerusalem (Mt. Zion)![5]

Finally, theocracy #1 will be overthrown by the true KING of Kings and LORD of Lords in theocracy #2.  The long-awaited ruling dynasty of the LORD Jesus Christ is coming.[6]  Heads will roll, and policies will change!  The Lord Jesus Christ will be sent from the Father as the Savior of the World.[7]  We will see that the primary purpose of the Day of the Lord will be to bring all things in subjection to Himself (Jesus) and then finally turn all things back over into subjection to the Father.[8]

Day 2

He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming quickly.” Amen.  Come, Lord Jesus.  (Revelation 2:20)

The bible gives us the fundamental steps to the establishment of the Rule of Jesus Christ.   Upon Jesus’ second coming:

  1. Satan is bound for one thousand years.[9]
  2. The resurrection of the Righteous.[10]  This is the “first resurrection” [11] that takes place at the second coming of Jesus after the Tribulation.
  3. The Marriage supper of the Lamb.[12]
  4. The separation of the sheep and the goats.[13]
    1. This is when the rulers[14] of this world are stripped of their authority, consigned to torments, and replaced by the sheep.
  5. The coronation and appointment of Jesus’ new administration.[15]
    1. This is where last week’s study of the crowns comes in.  Those ruling the nations will be appointed by Jesus in His administration.[16]
  6. The establishment of the Kingdom reign of Jesus Christ on planet earth for one thousand years.[17]
    1. This “millennial” reign of Christ is the “Day of the Lord,” or
      what the OT prophets speak of as “That day.”

Tomorrow we will look at some central passages that reveals what this epic transition will look like?  So, you could say the world’s godless and evil “satanically controlled” geopolitical administration is on a crash-course with the coming holy and righteous Jesus administration called the Kingdom of God😊.

Day 3

Note: Psalm 110 is quoted in the New Testament more than any other Old Testament passage.  Psalm 110 is important!  Read through this passage carefully.

*A Psalm of David. Psalm 110

1The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”
2The Lord shall send the rod of Your strength out of Zion.
Rule in the midst of Your enemies!

3Your people shall be volunteers
In the day of Your power;
In the beauties of holiness, from the womb of the morning,
You have the dew of Your youth.
4The Lord has sworn
And will not relent,
“You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.”

5The Lord is at Your right hand;
He shall execute kings in the day of His wrath.
6He shall judge among the nations,
He shall fill the places with dead bodies,
He shall execute the heads of many countries.
7He shall drink of the brook by the wayside;
Therefore He shall lift up the head. NKJV (italics by NKJV)

  • ·       (v. 1a) Where is Jesus now?  ________________________________________________
  • *(1b) What does it mean for God the Father to make Jesus’ enemies a footstool for His feet? _______________________________________________________________________
    • Read Isaiah 9:6-7 and note “the zeal of the LORD of Hosts will accomplish this.”  The Lord of Hosts is referencing the Father as is Psalm 110:1b
  • *Are Jesus’ enemies a footstool at His feet now? Why or why not?   _______________________________________________________________________
  • What does the word “till” (1b) imply? ________________________________________________________________________
  • (v. 2) What is the “rod of His strength” speaking of?[18] ________________________________________________________________________
  • (v. 2) Taking the passage at face-value, is Jesus ruling nowin the midst of His enemies”? ________________________________________________________________________
  • *If at Jesus’ second coming He rules “in the midst of His enemies”, that must mean there are those on the earth and among the nations that are not in subjection to Him during His kingdom reign.[19]
  • *Yet, there are those who are in submission to Him.
    • Note the people “volunteering in the day of His power” (3a).
    • Who are they? ____________________________________________________
  • (v.4) This is Jesus the High Priest;[20] and in this case the High Priest of all the nations.  What is the function of the High Priest?  ______________________________________   _______________________________________________________________________
    • Just a note that the High Priest of the Jews wore a golden crown with the inscription “holy to the Lord”[21]
  • (v.5) Kings are executed in the day of His wrath.  Let that soak in… Think about the “goats” who are consigned to torments at the separation of the sheep and the goats.[22]
  • Vv. 5-6 do not paint a pretty picture, but we must understand that the world Jesus “inherits from Adam’s fall” isn’t a pretty picture either.  Also remember that after the horrific bowl judgments of God during the Tribulation, men still do not repent![23]
  • When Jesus comes again, humanity is hardened into a rebellion against God that’s awfully hard for us to imagine.  That rebellion must and will be quelled at His coming.[24]
  • Vss. 5-6 teach us that the arrogant, self-serving political heads of state will be cut down.  Heads will roll at His coming.
  • (v. 7) Try to picture the battle scene of Jesus resting, “drinking from the brook” after His coming and the subsequent execution of these judgments.
  • Could you stretch your imagination even further to picture yourself next to Him?

Day 4

Psalm 2:5-9

5Then He shall speak to them in His wrath,
And distress them in His deep displeasure:
6“Yet I have set My King
On My holy hill of Zion.”

7“I will declare the decree:
The Lord has said to Me,
‘You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.
8Ask of Me, and I will give You
The nations for Your inheritance,
And the ends of the earth for Your possession.
9You shall break them with a rod of iron;
You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’ ”

  • Make sure you read all of Psalm 2 for context.
  • The appointed King of kings is doing business with the kings of the earth.[25]
  • Crooked politicians will get their day in court and Jesus will be the Judge.

But wait… will He be the only judge?

  • What about 1 Corinthians 6:2 where Paul says, “Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world?” (the only prophetic context for this passage is during the Day of the Lord—the Millennial Kingdom).
    • Can you think about some politicians you might like to judge?
    • Is there a cause or concern you would like to see made right?

Day 5

*Psalm 2:9

9You shall break them with a rod of iron;
You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’ ”

*Revelation 2:25-27

 25But hold fast what you have till I come. 26And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations—

27‘He shall rule them with a rod of iron;
They shall be dashed to pieces like the potter’s vessels’—

as I also have received from My Father;

  • Compare Psalm 2:9 with Revelation 2:25-27
    •  It’s one thing to picture Jesus executing righteousness and justice on the earth at His coming…

it’s another thing picturing YOU doing these things!

  • *Have you ever pictured yourself as participating in cleaning up the mess of injustices on this earth?
    • *What injustices or causes do you feel deeply for?  Maybe that you feel powerless to help?  _______________________________________________
      • Maybe because you’ve prayed about some of these things the Lord has not only laid them on your heart, but called you to do something about it in the age to come?
    • Well, KEEP praying because not all prayers are answered in this age.
      • Don’t think for a moment that Jesus will forget your prayer.  God’s Word and your walk with the Lord have led you to own a cause or calling.  He will not neglect you or His purpose for you at His coming.
      • Do all your prayers have to be answered in this age?  Could that be a little short-sighted, in light of His coming?
      • Do you think your calling is limited to this age only?  What about your giftedness?  Personality?
      • Maybe your life of faith has been building a case before the coming King that will unfold with you as the executor of His will and the adjudication of an evil situation… and then a kingdom blessing for 1000’s of people.
      • This is the truest classification of societal justice!  And because of your faith and prayer you may have every right to be a part of it.

Extra Credit:

  • In this age we do not wield the power of the King of kings (except in prayer), but based on our reward, power and authority that will be entrusted to us, scripture teaches that we will be used by the Lord to make things right.
    • Jesus is coming to bring all things [back] into subjection to Himself.
    • You are coming with Him— and we suspect not simply as a by-standing observer, but as a participant.

Jesus is the Love of our lives—our Savior—the One who is interceding for us even now!  Think about Jesus, your Great High Priest—the Great Intercessor![26]

  • Jesus intercedes for you now.[27]
    • And [now] in prayer, you flee to Him as your refuge from some evil inflicted upon you.[28]

  • In intercession you come to Him on behalf of someone suffering some injustice (you are modeling His intercessory ministry!).[29]
    • He sees your suffering and your faith; and He listens to your petition as your High Priest.  He sees your intercessions for others’ suffering.  He rewards your perseverance in the trials with the “crown of life.”[30]
    • It makes perfect sense that He would use YOU to right those wrongs even as “you volunteer in the day of His power.”[31]
    • Jesus is coming again as High King-Priest.
    • Based on Revelation 2:25-27, during the Day of the Lord, can you imagine Jesus entrusting to you the right to execute justice in that specific area of injustice under which you may have suffered or seen another suffering under?
    • Believer, maybe then He will own your cause as you now own His cause through the endurance of faith.  Maybe He will use you directly to right this wrong.
    • How long do you think it will take to bring the nations in subjection to the King of kings?  ______________________________________________________________________________

[14] Wicked rulers are often referred to as male goats in the Old Testament (Isaiah 14:9; Daniel 8).

[15] Revelation 2:25-27; 5:9-10; Daniel 7:18,22,27.  If you will receive a crown or crowns, you will receive it here and be installed as a co-heir (Romans 8:17; 2 Timothy 2:12) with Jesus in His Kingdom.

[16] The word administration is synonymous with the theological term dispensation “house rules”.  The Millennial Kingdom is often called the “dispensation of the Kingdom” by prophetic scholars.  I use the term administration because it’s easier for us to transfer the meaning from our current political language… e.g., a “Democrat” administration or a “Republican” administration etc.

[17] Revelation 20:6

[18] Cf. Revelation 19:15

[19] Cf. Psalm 66:3; Zechariah 14:16-19

[20] Hebrews 5-7 The Melchizedekian priesthood of Jesus is exercised during the Millennial Reign.

[21] Exodus 28:36; Leviticus 8:9 This is another crown we did not mention in our study on the crowns.  The priestly function was not simply a religious function representing man to God and God to man, there were clear ruling tasks/roles of the priesthood related to jurisprudence, law enforcement, leading, teaching and administration, even medical, social, health and welfare etc.

[22] Matthew 25:31-46

[23] Revelation 16:9,11,21

[24] It’s important to recognize that mankind still maintains freewill during the Day of the Lord… so things take time to develop.

[25] These kings are in danger of not giving honor, glory, tribute, obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ, the One Whom God has appointed as the inheritor of all the nations.
